With six Michelin stars to his name and presenting stints on Masterchef and Hells Kitchen, Gary Rhodes has proved himself a skilled chef and an ambassador for British cuisine.

But the TV star, author and restaurateur was recently on the receiving end of a cookery master class himself.

Travelling to Italy for his new TV series, Rhodes Across Italy, Rhodes, 49, experienced an education.

“I thought I knew about Italian food, then I realised I knew very little. I was being tutored in another cuisine. It was one of the greatest culinary experiences of my life,” the chef admits.

Here is a recipe featured in Rhodes Across Italy for you to try at home: Tiramisu (Serves four) Ingredients 3 eggs, separated 100g caster sugar 250g mascarpone cheese 200g savoiardi lady finger biscuits, or sponge fingers 200ml espresso coffee, or 2 tbsp instant coffee dissolved in 200ml hot water, left to cool 80g bitter cocoa powder berries and small mint sprigs Method Whisk the yolks and sugar together in a large bowl. Add the mascarpone and continue whisking until the mixture becomes a firm cream. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until firm and gently fold into the cream. Dip the biscuits in the coffee and turn them to soften the other side. Take four cappuccino cups and put a layer of savoiardi in the bottom of each. Spoon some of the mascarpone mixture over the top, then repeat the layers two or three times to fill the cups. To finish, dust with cocoa powder and decorate with berries and sprigs of mint.
