Letter of the week - A cut above the rest?

I had to smile when I saw the pictures in my newspaper of England footballers Green, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rooney and Cole, all sporting their new hair cuts, ‘created’ for them by celebrity stylist Daniel Johnson at, no doubt, great expense.

When I was a lad in the 1940s, non-celebrity George Underwood used to cut our hair just the same way as Mr Johnson did for those footballers and, back then, it was simply known as short back and sides.

It cost us sixpence and old George would give us back a penny for sitting still.

Of course money was tight just after the war and sometimes we had to make do with our mums plonking a pudding basin on our heads and trimming off any hair showing below, resulting in saving a tanner and getting exactly the same effect as those footballers with more money than sense.
