  • "I couldn't agree more! As a responsible dog owner, who actually considers others when walking my dog, I am disgusted by the numbers of people I see allowing their dogs to foul footpaths and not clearing up after them. It's ignorant and selfish behaviour but more importantly, a health hazard.

The problem is, when you see people allowing their pets to do this under a penalty warning sign, it's obvious that the current regulations are meaningless!

I hope this can be sorted out but with a care for those who are already responsible for their pets. The problem that usually occurs is that a draconian rule is put into place which only affects those already mindful of the rules and basic decency.

How the council will implement any rule to bring those who couldn't care less about regulation or other people is the difficult issue!"

Dog orders needed

I see that Wiltshire Council is consulting on and plans to introduce Dog Control Orders 2012 (Letters, April 12) which give more powers over dog fouling and access to dog walkers. I have recently become dismayed about the amount of dog mess around Calne. I often walk out with my baby son in his pushchair and we’re always running the gauntlet between piles of poop (in Duncan Street last week I counted three, plus numerous piles along Hungerford Road and Oxford Road).

I also note that along the bypass some particularly disgusting individuals bag up their dog poo and then hurl it into the trees, where it hangs. I am all for these new regulations, I know it is normally the minority that spoil things for the majority of responsible owners but the dog fouling is unsightly, unhygenic and, let’s face it, pretty foul!

Jo Mundy, Calne.
