Step in over garages

Paul Levy (Letters, April 12) raises an significant subject. Both the service stations he refers to, in and near Marlborough, boast rather optimistic ‘To Rent’ signs.

Today’s economic environment – together with the impending new facility on the Salisbury Road – will, I am sure, mean that there will be little interest shown in these opportunities.

The answer must, therefore, lie in action by our council.

The lower High Street is not an attractive retail area but could become a good residential proposition. The ‘bombsite’ on the busy A4 at Froxfield is adjacent to a popular restaurant and Caffe Nero should be persuaded to locate there rather than prevent another much needed ladies’ clothes shop from opening in Marlborough High Street.

I hope we will soon see some intervention by our council.

Bob Pawsey, Winterbourne Monkton.
