I am writing in response to the Gazette’s report (March 22) ‘Town bids for fame’ in which there is universal support not only to compete in the Mary Portas pilot town scheme but to prepare “a long-term solution to improve the Chippenham town centre”.
One particular item that would have greatly strengthened our case on this occasion but would certainly do so in any other event, and be an outstanding permanent improvement to the High Street, would be a large, good-looking clock with its lovely ironwork accompaniment high on the frontage of Emery Gate.
A welcome to visitors. A clock looked at for the sheer pleasure of it. An unmistakable rendezvous. A photogenic masterpiece to put us well among the famous High Street postcards.
It would be a lovely asset for ever more, our gift to the future.
