Frustrated at the lack of tourist information

I was pleased to read (Gazette, March 29) that the £1 million revamp scheme proposed for Marlborough’s town hall has been rejected by electors.

Reading on, I was angered and frustrated to see that whilst fresh proposals will include a museum, new council offices, better toilets, kitchen, bar and even external lift, there is no mention of any provision for a Tourist Information Centre.

I am currently working at Avebury and I am frequently asked for information about the area and where they can find the nearest TIC. The Avebury one no longer exists and I believe the nearest centre now is in Chippenham.

It’s a relief to know that re-opening the public toilets beneath the town hall is being considered. It’s a lack of business acumen to turn a blind eye to increased trade potential for the High Street through the absence of any formal tourist information point.

A website is not a fitting alternative. Many people like to converse with a human being.
