I cannot let July 19, 2009, the tenth anniversary of the launch of three Wigglybuses with Glenda Jackson in a field in Woodborough pass without comment.
Wigglybus was not just ground-breaking for Wiltshire but signalled a completely new approach for rural public transport for rural England. .
Despite the shedding of blood, sweat and tears, the services have given tremendous personal satisfaction to all the founders, professionals and residents who invested time in those early years. To participate in a project that transforms people’s lives is a huge privilege.
But to achieve its founding objectives which included reducing people’s reliance on travelling by car for all journeys we still have a very long way to go.
Losing a first rate name is a shame but to gain the possibility of taxi bus extensions to reach new neighbourhoods, and grow the Connect2 service so that it is more tempting is not just a wish but a must. We hope Wiltshire Council and the Devizes Area Board will work with us to realise the promise of all those years of hard slog. Kate Freeman, Association of Kennet Passengers, Etchilhampton, Devizes.
