I am writing to seek sponsors for my ‘channel swim’ in aid of the Wiltshire Blind Association.
The swim is 22 miles long, or 1,416 lengths of the local leisure pool. Since April 20 this year, I have been trying to swim at least half a mile (32 lengths) each week day morning. I have got three and a half miles left to swim.
As you probably know, the WBA is a local charity which does not receive any funding from the Government or the main charity for the blind, the RNIB. It relies on donations, legacies and fund raising efforts and events.
The WBA was set up in 1919 in order to help soldiers returning from the First World War. Today, anyone with sight problems can become a member.
I am a caseworker for the Devizes and Melksham area and have almost two hundred people on my patch, or section of Wiltshire.
We do what we can to support our members according to their needs, often when there is no more medical help available.
Among other things, the WBA runs clubs and holidays for its members.
