It is disturbing to read in your columns of police officers having to use gas and batons to break up a late night brawl in the centre of Chippenham, but we can only welcome the police’s determination to stamp out this kind of behaviour. In this they need the full co-operation of local club and pub owners and managers.

Local residents and councillors also have a part to play by, if necessary, opposing the renewal of licences for any drinking places which become the regular source of alcohol-fuelled violence and vandalism. All of this means we must support the work of the neighbourhood police teams and do all we can to get them the resources they need.

All very well opposing the renewal of licences but that doesn't stop them buying alchol from the supermarket at a third of the price. Make the supermarkets sell alcohol at a real price instead of letting them kill the pub trade in this country!

And stop getting on the backs of supermarkets who try to stop the selling of alcohol to under age people, aka Morrisons.
