THE proposal by Transition Marlborough for a 20mph speed limit throughout the town will not solve the air pollution problem they raise.
For 18/20 hours every day vehicles cruise through the High Street and London Road at low revs and with minimal acceleration. At 20mph a lower gear and higher revs would produce more emissions, not less.
A general 20mph speed limit would increase traffic congestion as well as vehicle emissions. It would not improve air quality for shoppers and it could damage the attraction of the town for visitors.
