SO James Gray and Michelle Donelan are proud to have voted in favour of the European Union Repeal Bill in which ‘all’ of the EU laws are to be transferred to the UK.
This would be good news if, by doing so, they had not also voted in favour of the removal of Parliamentary oversight of ministers who will be able to remove or change these laws, at a whim, without having to go through Parliament for approval.
The excuse used for including this anti-democratic measure is that Parliamentary committees would be able to scrutinise these ministerial decisions – but now that the Tories have packed all the scrutiny committees with an in-built Tory majority they have effectively suppressed any opposition to their point of view and carried out a coup in all but name.
One can understand Michelle Donelan’s misplaced pride in supporting this anti-democratic move – her naïve and incorrect comment that “when we leave the EU current legislation will remain the same” emphasises her failure to understand the implications of this disgraceful Tory power grab but James Gray has been around a lot longer and should know better.
His argument appears to be one of ‘trust us and don’t worry your pretty little heads about what we will be doing to your hard won democratic rights’. Trust the Tories to support workers’ rights and those rights that keep us all safe? Dream on.
The breathtaking ignorance and disregard for Parliamentary democracy that these two MPs have demonstrated is a disgrace that would, in an ideal world, result in their dismissal but, sadly, we do not live in an ideal world….
