FURTHER to the correspondence about clogs. I was born in Bolton in the 1930s and learned to walk in clogs. 
My mother had worn them when she worked in the mill and her mother wore them all her life. 
I was amazed that no mention was made of the Chippenham Folk Festival where they could be seen (and heard) in their hundreds to the great enjoyment of the people there. 
I watched with nostalgia and wondered how those dancers managed to sustain so much energy for three whole days. Clogs are quite heavy!
