AT THE weekend there was an event in Malmesbury town centre celebrating a balloon flight 136 years ago.
The main town car park was shut on Sunday for the event, as were some of the roads. A shuttle bus was arranged to transport people from the other car park near the town to the event.
My husband is disabled and a wheelchair user, so as the car park was closed including, I presumed, the disabled parking bays, I rang to see what provision had been made for disabled people.
I’m sorry to say there were none. “There were two spaces on the high street, but they would probably be filled,” we were told.
The shuttle bus could move walking disabled but not wheelchair bound.
My husband is not completely wheelchair bound, but my godchild is, as are many other folk in the town.
It’s not rocket science but if you aren’t used to disability I can see how you might not think of it, but we have organised big events, such as Malmesbury Abbey Skate, and have always been inclusive.
Just because a person is disabled doesn’t mean they don’t want to take part.
As it was we couldn’t attend the event, due to this problem.
