YOUR report last week that Wiltshire Council plans to raise £40,000pa by charging voluntary and charity groups to use the household recycling centres.

Last year the council slashed the hours these centres were open to the public – which means there are often long queues to use them.

This levy on charities is a further sign that Wiltshire doesn’t seem to want to run these places for the benefit of local communities.

Surely Wiltshire Council and Hills, which manages the recycling, could absorb the costs (if there really are any) of charities using the recycling centres for free?

I wonder if Hills might even be able to offset such costs against tax anyway.

It is a mean-spirited move and will be taking money that could and would otherwise be going to hospices, cancer research, refugee support etc.
