Fellow Gazette & Herald readers, who have not yet made up their mind whether to vote 'leave' or 'remain' on June 23, may find it helpful to ask themselves this question: "If the UK was not already a member, would I support a UK application to join the EU today?"

A "yes" answer would obviously mean that you are ideologically committed to the EU project, and you will vote accordingly on June 23.

If your considered answer is "no", then clearly you have no confidence in the UK's future as a province of a massive Eurasian state, currently dominated by Germany, but which is intended to include Turkey. Disregarding understandable concerns about the inevitable upheaval involved in altering our 50-plus-year-old relationship with Europe, you should also vote accordingly on June 23.
