I AM amazed that two beehives have suddenly appeared in the centre of Coopers Meadow in Marlborough.

I do not recall seeing any notice for the general public asking them what they thought about the idea.

What I do know is that some people have told me they are allergic to bee stings, and therefore are very wary of bees.

They do not feel comfortable seeing beehives, and would not want their children playing around them.

One person told me they may not be able to use the path in Coopers Meadow, and another said they have to get to a doctor or A&E quickly if they are stung.

So as this is a public amenity where children can play, picnics can be held etc, is it a suitable place for beehives?

I would say it is a most unsuitable place.

They have been placed in a small meadow in the centre of a very busy market town, not far from the coach station, a children’s play area and very well used public paths.

Young toddlers, the old, the disabled and busy working people all use the paths to go to school, the surgery and the shops.

But I understand that more beehives have been placed in the Victorian cemetery.

Now that is a sensible place, peaceful for the bees and peaceful for those who are interested and want to study them. But not a place where one has to go.

Perhaps the beehives should be moved out of Coopers Meadow before a single person is stung this season.
