I THOUGHT the article by Claire Perry regarding her referendum meeting in Marlborough had an air of desperation about it. She notably failed to point out that the overwhelming mood of the meeting was for Brexit.

Yes, the EU is a huge market, but our exports are falling for the simple reason is that apart from Germany the rest are bust and can hardly buy a packet of pins.

She says we control our borders as it is, but how can we absorb another three million people coming here by 2030? We don’t control the borders at all. If we were out we could tell incomers that they must prove that 1. they have a job; 2. they have a place to live; and 3. they can speak English. That’s control.

At least she agrees that the EU needs reform, but that’s never going to happen. If you were a fat cat in Brussels on a huge salary with lots of tax-free perks you wouldn’t rush to reform.

Finally, she tries to suggest that Winston Churchill was in favour of the EU but as he was cold in the ground more than 20 years before the EU was created, I think this is silly. We joined Europe for trade, not politics, and that’s what we still want but to achieve that we get out now.
