I HAVE received, recently, my postal ballot papers for the election of a police commissioner for Wiltshire.

Curiously, the papers contained the names of four individuals representing four political parties but with no indication of where to obtain any information on the credentials of each candidate.

Obviously it is not the responsibility of Wiltshire Council to provide any information which could be interpreted as partial, but surely there is a duty to ensure that each ‘wannabe’ informs the voting public of his or her suitability for the position.

At the same time, they might explain what is the practical purpose of the position and why there should be a political agenda. Anything to do with practical law enforcement is, surely, or at least should be, completely devolved from politics.
