THE decision not to build the Range distribution centre and store on land at Allington should not be blamed on the number of objections or Roman ruins. The new distribution centre to be built is planned to be 1.2 million square feet with possible expansion to 1.3 million square feet. This compares to the 72,000 square metres or 775,000 square feet for the proposed Chippenham one.
The Chippenham centre would have been much smaller than it would seem The Range now needs. If the Chippenham site had been built, how long would have it lasted before The Range decided to move to a larger site, leaving a vast empty monolith to blight the west of the town? The real reason for not building in Chippenham? The site was not big enough for their needs.
