I am appalled by James Gray’s ‘Little England’ sentiment over the refugees at Calais.

This is the greatest refugee crisis that Europe has faced since 1939, and we, the people of Great Britain, should be doing our bit.

I am pleased that my village and other communities across Wiltshire have been gathering to collect clothes and meet to discuss how they can help and accommodate refugees when they come. Ours is not a people that ‘walks by on the other side’.

There has been a failure by our government and others across Europe to engage with the Russians over the war that is drivin,g the mainstay of this crisis and I am glad that at last Putin and Obama are talking.
