I was pleased to see, in Hillworth Park recently, the seat in memory of Ray Roberts, a good friend to all fortunate enough to have known him.

He was, for years, a bastion of the Tornio-Devizes Twinning Association. His wonderful Finnish evenings were legendary; my friends and I know from experience.

Ray and his wife, Renate, gave holidays to children from Chernobyl, giving them respite from grim conditions at home. He was a stalwart of our local community, giving tirelessly of himself (even when ill) to helping others and spreading happiness. He touched a lot of lives. Ray never craved local or national recognition; his reward lay in the good which he achieved.

I was a member of Ray’s U3A geology group, appreciating at first hand his expertise, kindliness and humour, all imparted with the humility of an exceptional human being. He and Renate often invited us to their home to marvel at Ray’s huge rock and fossil collection. Their welcome was warm; our visits invariably took on a party atmosphere.

I know many people, like myself, cherish happy memories of Ray Roberts and who were deeply moved when, not long before his demise, Ray was dubbed Knight of the Order of the Finnish Lion.

Sir Ray -–I salute you.
