MP Michelle Donelan has been elected to the House of Commons' Education Select Committee and wants to help shape national education policy. But she thinks those state-funded schools which are not academies or free schools are run by "bureaucrats". Perhaps her Conservative colleagues on Wiltshire Council will put her right.

Those schools are run by democratically elected councillors, not by bureaucrats. Academies and free schools have no such democratic accountability.

If Ms Donelan wants some homework she should ask the House of Commons library for a copy of the public accounts committee's report 'Schools Oversight and Intervention' (January 2015). She will learn how lax a regime the government has created for overseeing academies and free schools.
