In 1935 I competed in the egg-and-spoon race at the King George V jubilee celebrations in the park at Cherhill.
In 1937 I competed again in the sports, during the celebration of the coronation of King George VI. There were of course many other traditional events such as greasy pole, pillow fights, racing and sideshows.
I was too young then to appreciate the beauty of the setting: underneath the Downs and Oldbury Castle. It reminds me, in a modest kind of way, of the cheese fair at Caerphilly underneath the castle.
The people of Cherhill should fight to keep the continuity and link with the past. J H Blackford, in his book The Manor and Village of Cherhill, refers to organisation of the above-mentioned celebrations.
I am sure that he would have been horrified at any thought of covering the site with concrete and Tarmac.
Who knows? Perhaps King William V Coronation celebrations could take place there and I could watch the young ones compete in the egg-and-spoon race.
