The controversial so-called Magna Carta 'muppets' procession apparently cost Wiltshire rate payers thousands of pounds at a time when Wiltshire Council is cutting its services elsewhere, reputedly to try and balance its books. This is just another example of Salisbury expecting the rest of Wiltshire to bail them out.

Some people may remember that the closure of the magistrates courts in Devizes and Trowbridge were to enable a new court set up in Salisbury to be built. So much for local justice for the people of central Wiltshire.

It is time that Salisbury started to pull its weight in Wiltshire. A good start would be for the cathedral to follow the example of Lincoln and loan out its Magna Carta. Wiltshire communities supported Salisbury in June, now Salisbury should allow its copy of Magna Carta to travel to County Hall so it is far more accessible to a much wider number of Wiltshire rate payers. Or is it always take and no give with the cathedral city?
