Today we close my constituency office at Avonbridge House in Chippenham for the final time.

For five years, it has been the place from which my small team and I have taken on and pursued a sizeable caseload, trying to get a better deal for the 5,000 local people who contacted me each year.

I would like to put on record my thanks, and that of many people who have kindly credited me, for the dedication of my caseworkers here over the years.

Modestly paid, but hugely committed, they have become familiar faces to our most regular visitors at the office and the more than 250 private surgeries we held in the towns across the constituency, no appointments needed. They lost their jobs, along with me, at the election but with far less financial security.

Since the election we have been following the strict requirements of the Data Protection Act returning more than 1,000 constituents' files to them when requested, and less commonly forwarding files, whenever directed to, as well.

Hiring publicly talented caseworkers can take some time, as does opening an accessible, town centre office, but I am sure my successor intends to do just that. New MPs start with none of this in place, I remember it well.

Until then, all casework should now be addressed to Ms Michelle Donelan MP, House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA, or by email to: michelle.donelan.mp@parliament.uk, and by phone on (020) 7219 4451. We loved our work, and I know what a privilege it was to serve, but my family and I have certainly welcomed the rest since May. I wish you all well.

Duncan Hames, The Walk, Holt.
