As I work in Marlborough and travel back to Devizes via the London Road every evening at about 5.20pm, it was with great trepidation that I read the signs that there were to be roadworks leading to long delays on my journey home.

On Monday the work began and on my way home I feared the worst, being part of a traffic jam was all I needed but as I approached the dreaded London Road I was surprised, there was a hold-up but only of about two minutes. Was I dreaming? Have the road works not materialised? No, they were there all right, as I drove past I saw a man sitting by the lights obviously controlling the flow of traffic. Could this continue, I thought to myself, we will see.

The same thing happened on Tuesday, no more of a hold-up than any other evening. On Wednesday I even got home earlier than normal and now it’s Friday, the end of the first week of ‘long delays’ and I haven’t been held up any more than usual all week.

I would like to praise whoever is in charge of traffic control of these works and if this continues for the whole duration, may I suggest that this man, who has the unenviable job of sitting by these lights, be given a permanent job in sorting what can and has been in the past roadwork chaos in Devizes, especially London Road.
