I WOULD like to respond to a letter written in the April 9 edition of the Gazette & Herald, titled: Holidays for ‘poor’ from Mrs B Morris.
She made the comment that if parents cannot afford to pay for school meals, they cannot afford to go on holiday.
My disabled mother was left to bring up my two brothers and I after our father left when we were all under six years old. He never paid any child support, and Mum could not work so we survived on benefits and free school meals.
We lived with my grandmother who worked until her late sixties to provide for us, and she went without to budget for a cheap holiday each year as a treat.
Nothing fancy, we went to Pontins, or caught a train and a ferry to the Isle of Wight for a self-catering chalet holiday.
I want to say to Mrs Morris, don’t tar every ‘poor’ family, some are just doing the best they can.
