The description in your February 19 edition of the original School Hill railway bridge at Brinkworth, recently replaced by Network Rail, as “a brick Brunel structure” is incorrect; Brunel, who was responsible for the structures on the original Bristol route of the 1840s, died in 1859, and construction of the South Wales direct line, on which Brinkworth is located, did not start until 1897, with the line opening for traffic in 1903.

While many of the bridges on the newer line were of a pleasing brick design, to judge from pictures I have seen, the replacement is certainly somewhat less pleasing.
