I read with interest your report on the latest headline-grabbing stunt by Devizes Guardian Nigel Carter (‘Setback on plan for town campus’, Gazette, December 8). Whilst this report may suit his publicity campaign, it is sadly misleading and devoid of realism.

Like all other Community Operations Boards, the Devizes COB is appointed by the local area board and as such reports to that board.

The COB’s role is to work up and submit a campus proposal to the area board. The area board is made up of all the elected Wiltshire councillors for the area and it is they who will decide whether to agree the proposal and to submit it to the council for further work.

This is likely to include a feasibility assessment which, if successful, will be submitted to the council’s Cabinet to seek approval and to agree the allocation of funding required to deliver the campus.

The campus development process has worked well with all of the eight campuses which are currently approved and funded by the council up to a total of £75 million. This major programme of investment publicly indicates Wiltshire Council’s support for campuses and delivering better quality services in local communities.

Readers will be aware that the Wiltshire campus programme is moving forward at a time when other local authorities are closing leisure, library and community facilities.

However, the groundbreaking campus programme remains a flagship policy of the Conservative administration of Wiltshire Council and we aim to have more than half the programme either completed or being built within the next two years.

So instead of spending his time grandstanding, Nigel Carter would be better advised to spend his time working up a proposal for a Devizes Campus and submitting it to the area board for their consideration.

I look forward to seeing a proposal from Devizes Area Board.

Jonathon Seed, Cabinet Member for Communities, Campuses, Area Boards, Leisure, Libraries and Flooding, Conservative Member for Summerham and Seend, Wiltshire Council.
