In his column in last week’s Gazette & Herald, MP James Gray made an astonishing attack on David Cameron. He says he hopes that the Prime Minister will fail to renegotiate the terms of our European Union membership.

In doing so, Mr Gray suggests it will make it easier to get Great Britain out of Europe.

During this year, I have spoken to thousands of North Wiltshire residents, asking their views on local and national issues.

One of those is Britain’s membership of the European Union. More than 4,000 people have given their views.

A clear majority know that EU membership is vital for our economy and particularly for our jobs. That is hardly surprising given half of UK ‘exports’ go to the European Union and that market is vital to big local employers like Airbus, Honda and BMW.

In taking his stance Mr Gray is playing his ‘politics’ above local people’s jobs.

He is appealing to the lowest common denominator, whatever the long-term cost to our country or to the electorate, so as to save his own neck in next year’s General Election. I believe voters will see through this ploy.
