It was good to read the coverage in the Gazette & Herald about the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visit to Malmesbury on September 13 but it was disappointing that there was no mention about the Archbishop’s visit to Chippenham on the same day.

There was a very joyful birthday celebration at St Peter’s Church, attended by some very special people.

It was a party to celebrate the third anniversary of LIGHT (Living In God’s Heart Together). LIGHT is a monthly occasion of joy and happiness when local people with special needs or learning difficulties come with family members, carers and friends to have fun together. Those who come along to LIGHT, an ecumenical gathering, enjoy lovely refreshments and being creative by engaging in various craft activities and then in music, song and actions as part of an informal and simple act of Christian worship and prayer.

When the Archbishop heard about LIGHT and knew he would be in North Wiltshire on the afternoon of their party, he was determined to be there, to spend time and to party with those very vulnerable but special people who have many different complex needs but who also, when given the chance, love and enjoy being involved in Christian worship and prayer.

And so this down-to-earth Archbishop and his wife and the Bishop of Bristol easily and happily joined in this wonderful celebration, delighting everyone there, including members of the Tom Metcalf Day Centre for folk with learning disabilities who had also been invited. Yes, we do have an Archbishop who really cares and is prepared to go out of his way to become one with members of our society who are sometimes marginalised.

LIGHT is supported by ecumenical Christians from several churches in the Chippenham, Corsham and Box area. It usually meets on the third Sunday of each month between 3pm and 4.30pm at Ladyfield Evangelical Church in Hungerdown Lane, Chippenham, which is wheelchair accessible.

If you know of anyone who has a special need or learning disabilities why not bring joy and happiness into their lives by bringing them along on October 19?
