Chippenham passengers leaving the bus station are often inconvenienced by sitting in stationary traffic while the bus has to go all around the houses (Gladstone Road, Avenue La Fleche, Bridge roundabout and Bath Road) just to reach the bottom of the High Street.

Cars leaving the Gladstone Road car park behind the Borough Parade shopping centre cause congestion as they try to get from Gladstone Road onto Avenue La Fleche.

This is particularly frustrating for passengers going to Chippenham railway station (eg, route 55 from Calne) who then get stuck in traffic in the last half a mile and may miss their train as a result.

The problem is particularly bad in the evening peak hour and on Saturdays (especially towards Christmas).

A simple solution would be to allow buses to use Market Place and the High Street precinct in one direction only from the bus station down towards The Bridge.

A strict 10mph speed limit could be imposed. The current bollards would not need to be moved because buses would only go down the hill and there would be no bus stops in the High Street.

A simple bus gate could ensure that cars and other vehicles do not enter the High Street, which has been used for many years in Bath.

Buses travelling towards the bus station are not usually delayed in Gladstone Road and they could continue to use their existing routing.
