I have noted and agree with the comments made during past editions of the Gazette & Herald about the eyesore on top of the recently restored and refurbished former Le Marchant Barracks in Devizes.

Speaking of Barracks, I wonder if Barack Obama flew over this in his helicopter when travelling from Newport to Stonehenge. If so, this world leader must have been confused at seeing such beautiful period architecture defaced by an ugly concrete ‘site office’ (that’s what I took it to be, as others have).

Wiltshire Council planners should hang their heads in shame if this really is a permanent structure – Mr Obama may well have been impressed by the edifice that is Stonehenge, but not by the much more recent restoration of these barracks.

Can we hope it is removed in the near future before it becomes an embarrassment even further afield (although the United States is quite far enough)?

As for the potholes in the road and the Tour of Britain, well that is the subject of more embarrassment for Wiltshire Council.
