Your article on the town council’s approach to funding the town’s CCTV badly misrepresented the lead group’s approach to Devizes Development Partnership’s (DDP’s) request for a further, extended period of funding.

The DDP’s future is doubtful and, if it were to fold, it would leave the town council in the unenviable position of managing the operation or allowing it to fail.

The Devizes Guardians do support the town centre CCTV system, which is why we voted in favour of extending its funding for a further year. In the interests of both townspeople and council tax payers, however, we are also asking for assurance that the system is both effective and following the current Surveillance Camera Code of Practice (2013), authorised by the Home Office, before making any guarantee for future years. This is no more than ordinary prudence and common sense, from which the operators have nothing to fear if everything is in order.
