I have on many occasions shaken my head in sad reflection at the antics of cycling clubs which use the country lanes around the villages in this area, where they seem to believe the Highway Code doesn’t apply to them.
You can come around a bend in a lane and find them occuping the entire road ahead of you, where they suddenly cut across traffic without any warning and mount pavements even if there are people walking there. When you query them you encounter the most vile abuse.
Today, however, if my reactions and the reactions of the driver coming in the opposite direction had been slower, there would have been a shocking accident. I slowed down on Grittleton Lane in Yatton Keynell to allow the driver turning off the B4039 towards Grittleton to pass the pinch point. One of the two cyclists behind then overtook me, causing me to step hard on my brakes and the driver coming in the oppsite direction to do the same.
I stopped outside Yatton Keynell Stores to ask them what they thought they were doing to be lambasted with a lot of anti-car ranting, the last of which was about four-wheel drives. I own a Nissan 1600 that is definatley not four-wheel drive. We really need the presence of a few police officers on a Saturday or Sunday to stop this insane behaviour.
