What a state that very narrow bit by the sorting office and St Cecilia’s, St Mary’s School, Calne, is always in. Nobody cleans the footpaths, even though it is part of the processional route, and hundreds of people walk along it daily to and from the Curzon Park estate and other estates on the Chippenham side of Calne. Buses and hundreds of cars go along it every day.

The road camber is directed so that the water ends up on the south side, the small house side of the road, and thus the passing cars splash and damage the lower part of all the homes. Those cars that use the footpath because they are impatient sometimes damage the houses, but such damage, we are advised by our MP, is the responsibility of the private house owner, even though they are graded and listed heritage houses.

Curzon Street East was part of the old A4 that led to and from the Square, Calne – the main route from Bristol and Bath to London. You would think people would be proud of it.

They have made a very good job of redecorating the Wheatsheaf pub and plans are afoot to improve St Cecilia’s facade. Let’s hope they get planning permission and let’s hope a few plants and flowers are added.

Curzon Street East lowers everbody’s image of Calne, which is a pity. Calne is such a beautiful place and would attract more visitors and shoppers if the approach was improved.
