I fully support Cynthia Crocker’s views last week on more disabled parking bays in the Market Place and greater use of the Station Road car park in Devizes.

For people who live on the edge of the town like myself, it takes at least an hour to walk into the centre and back again and although I do it on occasions, there are times when I just want to nip into the bank or buy a newspaper. If I do any serious shopping, walking is out of the question because of the sheer weight and bulk of the items to be carried home, but Cynthia has given me food for thought.

If you ask anyone about Station Road car park, many will complain that it is too far away and the hill is difficult to climb, so here is my humble solution to this issue. The town buses have to turn around in the Market Place. The 1C at least discharges its passengers at the Corn Exchange before going down Station Road empty to turn around.

There is nothing to say that there could not be another bus stop at the entrance to Station Road car park, where people can be picked up for free (on the production of their parking ticket) and dropped off in the Market Place to do their shopping, before being returned once more to the car park. Simple.

The council is already subsidising the three local buses to travel this route, and some out of town buses do the same route, so the costs to taxpayers would be nothing, especially if the extra revenue from increased number of parking tissues were taken into account.

Incidentally, Cynthia, I’m currently walking an average of 2,500 miles a year and leading short walks of three to eight miles for the thriving U3A in the town. You would be more than welcome to join us.
