Contrary to what Peter Morgan claims in his ‘Letter of the week’ last week, the democratic process was not a farce at the Marlborough Area Board meeting on Monday, March 31.

The decision to support CCTV in Marlborough was taken in January last year. It was endorsed by the town council more recently.

These decisions were taken by our elected members of the town and county council. Elected members have a status and a duty to arrive at decisions that self-appointed groups and individuals do not have.

The decision followed a public consultation process where a large majority of the public supported the idea of CCTV in Marlborough.

The anti-CCTV group lost the vote in both the area board and town council and by their loud and rude barracking and heckling at Monday’s meeting showed that they are losing the argument as well.

CCTV in the High Street is not only a deterrent for serious crimes such as the Deacon’s jewellery raid but also the low level anti-social behaviour and vandalism that occurs quite often.

The High Street is a public place and there should be public support to try and combat this behaviour.
