I suppose that Wiltshire Council deserves to be congratulated because it has kept the rise in council tax down to 1.5 per cent over the last four years. If it keeps this up for the next 25 years, council tax will again come into line with general inflation.

Over the last 20 years it has risen by 210 per cent, whereas the cost of living has risen by about 75 per cent.

If inflation keeps at its present level of about three per cent, it will take 25 years to reach the same comparative level with council tax that it was 20 years ago.
