Devizes never really strikes me as a violent town, certainly no more than any other. But this weekend was a black one with the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old Barry Cooper and a dreadful sex attack on a 17-year-old girl.

So after all the fuss, the protests and the near-the knuckle hatred, North Wiltshire District Council has decided it doesn't want to be the one to make a decision over where to put gypsy sites in the district.

In among the usual letters complaining about council tax, gypsies, health spending, the state of the roads, dog poo, gypsies, the weather and gypsies was a lovely missive from a chap in Chippenham about the town's John Coles Park.

I was a bit taken aback today when someone rang me to tell me that Mark Boden the chief executive of Kennet District Council has been given the post of director of economic development at the new supercouncil for Wiltshire when it comes into force next April.

This year we intended to run a campaign in the paper to raise money for Wiltshire's air ambulance. Instead, and if you'd told me this a couple of years ago I'd have said you were madder than John McCrirrick, we are running a campaign to save it.

Today was a lovely peaceful day in Devizes. The sun peeped through the clouds (occasionally), families strolled along to the May Fair in the Market Place and there was a generally agreeable air about the place.

After a particularly grim meeting in Swindon the other day, which was just a shade less uplifting than an undertakers' convention, I received the perfect antidote when I went to judge the area finals of the Young Enterprise competition.

Our reporter Scott McPherson picked up a very strong rumour this week that WH Smith is about to quit its store in Chippenham High Street and that a Marks & Spencer Simply Food is a hot favourite to take over.

Today is of course Valentine's Day and by rights I should be dashing this off quickly before taking my wife out for an over-priced meal with complimentary glass of lukewarm champagne-style Ukranian Cava in a crowded restaurant full of couples bickering over who is going to drive home.

APPARENTLY today some of the First Great Western fare strikers, who were supposed to be refusing to pay for their journey to London, handed in fake tickets in protest at the level of service. And then handed in their real tickets because they didn't want to break the law.

I spent a pleasant couple of hours today trying to decipher the new primary school league tables. I use the word pleasant in the sense of having your toenails clipped with an angle grinder.
