The hand of God

I was sitting in the hairdressers yesterday - yes us journalists are always on call - when I got a message to say the stained glass window at St Andrew's Church in Long Street, Devizes, had crashed down during the high winds.

It was interesting then how the news trickled through the town. Half an hour later everyone in the salon was buzzing with the story.

It really isn't a good time for churches in Devizes. One was badly damaged by fire, now one has lost one of its main windows, one is under threat of closure and another has already closed.

I got back to the office to get a call to say Chippenham railway station was closed after part of the roofing of the bridge over the lines had been brought down by the winds.

As a number of people have pointed out at least this gave the railway operator an excuse for delays.

Ironically yesterday morning our photographer went early to Pewsey station to get a picture of a commuter who is going to write a blog for us on her daily journey to London. An hour and a half later she and our photographer were still waiting for the train!

The big story today is that Chippenham Town manager Darren Perrin has been suspended. Of course this really means he has been sacked but no-one is allowed to say that yet.

Chairman Sandie Webb is out of the country so that has probably got something to do with it. I doubt very much if Darren will be taking up the bosses job again at Hardenhuish Park.

Life in football at any level is all about results and poor old Darren just hasn't been getting them.
