Why no maths teacher?

Like most parents I was interested to see the GCSE league tables that came out this week. Papers get a sneak preview of the league tables a few days before they can be published and I was a bit shocked to see Devizes School (where my 15-year-old daughter is a pupil) could only manage 38 per cent of its pupils passing five or more gcses at grade C or above when subjects included maths and English.

Last weekend I spent a few days in Greece and it was great sitting in the sunshine in a beach side taverna but it really made me appreciate the festive look Devizes has taken on when I returned.

I went shopping in London on Saturday and what a mistake that was. Even my clothes mad teenage daughter who adores shops was very glad to get back to the tranquility of Wiltshire.

Terrible loss of a young life

The death of 11-year-old Sam Odell, who died after being hit by a van outside Sheldon School, in Chippenham is the sort of terrible tragedy that helps to put life into perspective.

I went to Sainsbury in Devizes today to do our usual weekly shop and after a few tours up and down the aisles I gave up looking for the Bovril and asked a helpful lady on the deli counter if she had any idea where it was kept.

The hand of God

I was sitting in the hairdressers yesterday - yes us journalists are always on call - when I got a message to say the stained glass window at St Andrew's Church in Long Street, Devizes, had crashed down during the high winds.
