Many years ago when the petrol station was where Quickfit now is, I filled up my car and offered a Scottish £10 note in payment. They refused to accept it and I asked them to syphon exactly £10's worth of petrol out of my tank. It was amazing how quickly they then took the money. Scottish money is legal tender. The banks accept it, and I honestly don't see any reason for people refusing it. Given the state of the country I would have thought shopkeepers would be glad of anyone spending money in their shops. Even Scots people.

Fair points, as always, MD. But as we're a single state, shouldn't we ahve a single currency? It would also save a lot of confusion.

That's also fair comment Don, but I would then ask why the "Bloody ridiculous" comment on your first post. As a Scot I'm often asked why we dislike the English. I personally like English people. I'm married to an English girl and have lived among my southern brethern for some time. I can however see why some of my fellow Scots could take offence at your comment.

Well I wouldn't say ridiculous but Scottish bank notes do cause confusion amongst shopkeepers etc.
who rarely see them. In these days of forgeries, suspician is understandable. Legal tender has a specific meaning under law and in short, Bank of England notes are the only banknotes that are legal tender in England. Scottish notes are not considered legal tender(even in Scotland), however are not illegal under English law and traders may accept them if they choose. Banks in England will take them in (in order to repatriate them) but won't issue them. So I think it is reasonable to expect people to take them but not to expect them to be happy about it.

When I wrote this, I'd just read something about Alistair Darling. The Scot who's doing his best to destroy centuries of English pub & brewing heritage. I cannot remember despising a serving politician so much since the days of She Who Cannot Be Named. And the next Scottish thing I saw, I lashed out.
