Allen puts himself in the frame

Chris Allen could become a key figure in Swindon Town's run-in for the League One play-offs, according to boss Maurice Malpas.

The Devizes-born midfielder was handed his first start under Malpas and produced an assured display in the 2-2 draw at Oldham on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old was set to go on loan last month but, with other clubs failing to take a gamble and Michael Pook's injury, Allen was handed his chance.

"He was always in my plans but we felt if we could get him out on loan he would benefit from some more experience, because Pook was in the team and playing well," said Malpas.

"But it turns out Pook got injured and Chris played against Oldham and I thought he was exceptional."

But Malpas refused to say whether Allen would be handed another start against Leeds United at the County Ground on Saturday.

"It depends what team and formation we play on Saturday," he added.

Allen's first team chances have further improved with Malpas drawing a blank in the loan market.

"Some players are well out of our wage bracket," said the Scottish boss.
