NEW Swindon signing Lee Cox has revealed it was the ambition of Paolo Di Canio and Jeremy Wray that convinced him to make the return to England and join the promotion-chasing Robins.
The 21-year-old was on the books of Leicester City as a teenager but moved north of the border three years ago to sign for Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Cox was an instant success at the Scottish side and helped the club first gain promotion to the Scottish Premier League and then secure an impressive seventh-place finish last season.
He was out of contract in the summer but had looked all set to sign a new deal at Terry Butcher’s side.
However, once Swindon made their interest known he jumped at the chance to join the Wiltshire side.
“I was sitting at home and I got a call from my agent saying that Swindon were interested and straight away I started buzzing about it,” he said.
“After a couple of weeks the deal more or less came about and I am now excited for the challenge.
“I had a chat with the chairman and manager and you could just see from both of them that they are looking to take the club forward. They are both ambitious men.
“Swindon are a big club with a lot of history. It is clear they have huge ambitions and knowing the gaffer he would not come to a club that did not have such ambition.”
Cox made over 60 appearances for Inverness, playing against Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers, and he believes the experience he gained at the club will give him a good chance of making a successful return to English football.
“I went up to Inverness and had a very successful time there. I got promoted with the club in my first year and then we just missed out on the top six after everyone thought we would get relegated,” he added.
“I played a lot of games and got a lot of experience and I hope that will stand me in good stead back in my home country.”
Cox will compete with Simon Ferry, Jonathan Smith and Oliver Risser for one of the two places in the centre of midfield, and he hopes he can offer Di Canio a different option to what he already has available at Swindon.
He said: “I am an all-round midfielder, my strength is getting the tackles in, breaking up play and spraying the ball around the pitch.”

Hopefully this chap may free Ferry up a little more to attack...

Sad to hear about Flint although he may yet opt for an injection for a few weeks - would be concerned about him having that on his mind and more importantly about his future.
