THE PAOLO DI CANIO COLUMN: On being linked with other jobs

Like Matt Ritchie and many other players, it is the same for a manager when they are linked to another club.

If you hear your name in a positive way it causes you to work even harder at your current club, but no more than this.

The speculation means that you have done well up to that point and this is what you want in some way – that people recognise what you have done - but it doesn’t matter to me because I gave my word to this club.

Even if the fans would be honoured to hear Paolo Di Canio linked with Barcelona for £10million, then it can make them feel proud because I started with Swindon.

But if we are talking about Championship or Premier League club then we have to be realistic. It is exciting to know that these people are focusing their attention on here but I don’t see why I would have to leave.

I want to win the league and I promised something and for me the words are more important than a contract.

If I am good, there is a time to move on but that is not now, I want to win this league and climb the leagues, like has been said.

If the Chairman and the club decide in a different way then we can have a discussion because I can’t plead with the people like I don’t want to plead to the players to remain.

If the club wants me to stay and if the plan is the same plan as I heard at Heathrow when I first met them, and that is still the case because here there is a fantastic plan for the future and we run in the same direction, then I don’t have pressure because I want to stay here.

When you really focus the attention on your job because you are excited and positive, then I don’t have any distractions.

If any Championship side offered me the money to go then I would say that I am very happy and it a nice honour, because they recognise my work, but no more than this.

reading the article on eatsleepsport actually for the first time has worried me somewhat. Paolo now only seems to be committing to the end of the season. After the talk of taking us to the championship and even the prem. I do hope there is nothing in this. Maybe he's surpassed even his own expectations. I for one would like him to be at this club as long as fergie has been at utd. some may think prematurely seeing as he hasn't actually won anything yet but it doesn't take a genius to see that's only a matter of time and that Paolo is truly gifted as gifted off the pitch as he was on it!

Paolo has always said he wont consider leaving until we're in The Championship or even higher. Very conserned thay he appears to now only be committing until the end of the season. Lets hope it's purely a plan to get the board to give him a nice new, long term deal.

I truly believe him when he says his word means more than a contract - refreshing when you think that even a contract seems to mean very little to most in football these days, let along their "word" (we can all remember several who've pledged themselves to Swindon and then unceremoniously ****ed off).

Paraphrasing this, I think he's saying - if the board want me to go cause they get offered a load of money to sever my contract, then I won't beg to stay. But if they want me here to do the job, I'm happy staying, and I'll stay until the job is done, i.e. taking the club as far as he can take it. A good man to have at the helm - massive amounts of respect due.

But let's be realistic; as a player he didn't stay anywhere for long, even at clubs he professed his undying love for, so I'm just going to enjoy his time here for however long it lasts. I don't doubt him for a minute when he says he wants to take Swindon to the Championship and beyond, but that is his enthusiasm and passion for the job talking, not a cast-iron guarantee he'll stay until it happens.

I have read his book and even though he did move around quite a bit during his playing career it was mostly done when the club didnt want him anymore, ie Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic to name just 2! When he was at West Ham he had the chance to join Manchester United, Fergie tried hard to get him but he chose to stay loyal to the Hammers even though he could have earned a lot more at United, so bearing all that in mind i really do believe he is a man of his word and if he says he will stay here until we get into the Championship then i believe him! He is a man of his word, to him honour means everything. As most you said above most Town fans now love this man, he is easily the most charismatic manager in our history and he may go on to be our most succesful manager, he will certainly be the most loved manager in our history and when the day comes for him to leave there will be a lot of broken hearts in Swindon.....but until that day lets stop worrying and trust him and enjoy this fantastic rollercoaster ride we are currently on. And Jeremy Wray deserves a huge thank you from us fans, he has been superb as has been the rest of the board, i hope JW is elected permanently soon. One last point, i think it was well worth last seasons misery and relegation to be where we are now with such a great man as our manager!

I think the end of the season will be the point that all is decided. If the board back Paolo to put together a Championship squad for the (hopefully) League 1 Campaign I believe PDC will be more than tempted to continue the job. The club have to match his ambition and if played correctly he could be in charge of a Championship team in little over 2 years. However, If the right club come in for him, and there are not too many I'd say that are that much more attractive than ourselves, then I'm sure he would listen to offers. If he wins this league he has effectively shown all potential chairmen he is capable and can also beat teams in higher divisions. It would be hard for the club to turn down a high compensation package - it's the same for players - all have a price. We shall see.

It seems some people can't read or don't have an understanding of the written English.
Paolo states quite clearly that he's going nowhere very soon. He gave his word and is comitted to Swindon Town.
When he feels he doesn't have the backing anymore or when he thinks he's taken us as far as he can then that is when he'll go.
I've read his autobiography and as others have pointed out Paolo is a very honourable and loyal person. I look forward to him being our manager in the championship and hopefully beyond. Paolo has said on more than one occasion that his dream is to lead Swindon Town out at Old Trafford in the Premiership.
Whilst everything in life is prone to change , I believe we have at least another two years of this great man.

I interpret this that Paolo will stay for the foreseeable future unless Barcelona offer £10m, even if there is interest from Premiership or Championship clubs. Great news!

I am interested to know what the fantastic plan for the future is that was discussed at Heathrow. This sounds very intriguing. Presumably this involves the board developing the stadium whilst supporting Paolo financially in producing a team to fill it, and with a goal of being in a certain position in a few years time.

It would be good to perhaps hear the current short and long term goals, and here's hoping that the Wray - Di Canio team is long-term!

Why would they put themselves under the microscope by revealing too much about these great plans they have?
*
All that would serve as is a bullet in a loaded gun just ready to be fired by the fans the minute things don't 'appear' to be going as indicated.
*
Undoubtedly this board have ambition, undoubtedly they want a return on their investment at some point, and it appears that having made mistakes along the way they have at least learnt from them, and it seems that their intent for the above to happen is both serious, and imminent.
*
If I was a guessing man, I'd say that an income generating stadium and championship football was the cornerstone of any longer term objective, and they seem in a hurry to achieve it, having failed thus far in the intial bold statements made by Fitton & Co.
*
Of course, there comes a time when Swindon, 'the town', has to buy into it all too. The clock is ticking folks, time to back your football club.

Ditto that: What more can the man say!?

Read it again - he is not going unless the board see it differently:
..
"If the club wants me to stay and if the plan is the same plan as I heard at Heathrow when I first met them, and that is still the case because here there is a fantastic plan for the future and we run in the same direction, then I don’t have pressure because I want to stay here."
..
Unless they planned for him to get us promoted to League 1 and then move on I read this as saying he is here to see us into the Championship and then we can all take stock again..if the club can support him in a challenge for promotion to the Premier league and a new stadium then I reckon he'd stay beyond that - he is more loyal than most other managers.

Just relax and more importantly do your bit by coming through the turnstiles.

Paolo came here for a reason. To be given the complete control of running a football club on the pitch. Jeremy Wray and the Board have backed him all the way. Has not all gone well without no problems but this had strengthened the relationship.

Paolo is old school with loyal values, respect and working class morals.

To me the Di Canio / Wray relationship is like a strong marriage. Testing for sure with the personalities but with these two the respect is the growing all the time.

Paolo will no doubt move on but not now and I genuinely believe he is here a longer while yet. He has not achieved anything yet but I believe he will being the good times back to out club.

We are in a great position with a great Board and Manager. Enjoy these good times because it has been a long time coming.

Let's hope the people of Swindon show their support by coming to the games. Great time to support STFC.

Obviously a premiership side would be different - but think PdC realise that won't happen until he is doing it in the Championship at least!
.
As for the boards plans - they have made it clear a self sufficient championship football team in a new 20-25k stadium
.
Oh and as for AF's bold 5 year plan - if PdC delivers back to back promotions we would have met it!
.
Below are the boards full seasons in charge
.
1 - Malpas / Wislon
2 - Wilson PO final
3 - Wilson Relegation
4 - PdC L2 Champions and JPT winners
5 - PdC L1 Champions and JPT winners

Sky Sports are trying to link Paolo to the Leeds job. I don't think it would be 15 minutes gone before Paolo decked Ken Bates, I think those two would have a chemistry best described as 'combustible'.

But might it be a good idea to get Paolo on a longer contract so that if clubs do come sniffing in the summer, the compensation will be greater?

Otherwise I agree with 2012 - in the summer Paolo will give Jay-Ray a shopping list for a team to get into the Championship (I actually think this one is almost good enough, with one or two reinforcements in key positions). Jay-Ray will then gulp at the cost of it all and then hopefully sign the cheque.

I absolutely love Di Canio, he is the best thing to happen to this club for a long, long time and I don't ever want him to leave.
Spot on.
He wants Championship football with Swindon. So does JW. Do the Swindon public? If so, prove it and fill the ground. Commitment from everybody is needed on a regular basis not just the odd trip to Wembley. Something big is happening here. Onwards.

I agree with almost eveyone that's posted today on Paolo's commitment to us. I have seen the Sky report immediately after the Grayson dismissal from Leeds and it would seem the media is putting him in the frame for their next manager, Hope we would have learned our lesson from our last encounter with master Bates, despite the agreement on Wise he never paid a penny due to them going into administration, wouldn't be surprised if it was part of the deal to get free transfers with Lucas and Douglas etc as part of their offerl to compensate us for their default on payment for Wise.

Once bitten, twice shy, stay clear of Bates Jeremy, I'm sure Paolo will put your trust in the best Chairman you'll ever serve under, i.e. Jeremy Wray, he is the main man and by the way West Ham won't be any easier to deal with than Bates.

For those that have not seen the Sky interview, Paolo said "This year i can only win div 2 and the JPT, why would I want to think about what I can acheive elsewhere in one or two years time". maybe not exactly what he said but that is what I understood him to say, stand corrected if I'm wrong.

Honestly believe PDC's words that he has no reason to leave if " The Plan" stays the same as his 1st meeting with Wray at Heathrow unless the club decide he is no longer required and if you read his book he is a man of his worg throughout his life . We certainly need Wray & PDC to stay at the helm of our great club . Onwards and upwards !

Having seen Leicester's ground, its difficult to see how we can get a 25K stadium at the CG site, I'm all for tradition but I think it's time to stop flogging a dead horse and look to build a new stadium @ a new venue, we could go for years trying to redevelope and get nowhere, in the meantime PdC will have flown the nest.

The STFC train is starting to run at full speed and with the thought of a brand new stadium who know's where it could end up. (look at Brighton) anyone know of a spare plot going??

PDC is obviously here until he goes, and when he does, it will be on the back of leaving us in a much better position than when he joined, on and off the pitch, and with a wealth of talent in the squad.

It is plainly obvious that he is still climbing the learning curve, and if he ever does think of leaving, do you really think he will debate it here first ?

When he goes it will be mixed emotions, thanks for his input and getting us out of L2, yet sadness that he is gone. One thing is for sure, it will take a VERY big man to fill his boots.

Agree with the first line, but haven't the alternative sides been reviewed and it was decided to go with redevelopment of the CG site, starting with Town End, but put on hold due to relegation to L2?

I'm sure I stand to be corrected, but it would be good to have an update, although thinking about things it might be worth getting promotion in the bag first, let's not get ahead of ourselves.....!

Ditto that: What more can the man say!? -- Read it again - he is not going unless the board see it differently: .. "If the club wants me to stay and if the plan is the same plan as I heard at Heathrow when I first met them, and that is still the case because here there is a fantastic plan for the future and we run in the same direction, then I don’t have pressure because I want to stay here." ..
SAP so by your analogy then -if assuming we go up this season and say we then take another five years to reach the Championship are you really suggesting that PDC would stay for that length of time for example?

Can't see it myself I'm afraid - I think for example that he'd have to deliver that within say 3yrs and then he'd be in demand anyway wouldn't he?

OTR,

To save you the bother of going to BabelFish, it means:-

Your French is not bad, considering how long since you were at school.
You were almost correct about the wine, but I only drink white. Red gives me a bad head after the 4th bottle!

Although, I live in France, Mondeaux has nothing to do with the French language, it is derived from my real name.

I read into this that like you he'll stay to the end of the season.

I'd think that if a championship or premier club came in for him then and the deal was right for him and the club -he'll go. Would expect the public message to be along the llnes of " club has received very good offer of compo - this offer will be of huge benefit to STFC - we realise that PDC is ambitious and both parties don't want to hinder the others progress" etc etc.

Anybody who thinks that he'll stay any more than one more season max needs to "get em off" the specs I mean of the rose variety!
