THE PAOLO DI CANIO COLUMN: Dedicating the Southend win to his mum

My dad worked hard to build the family and lead by example and my mum did the same but in a different way.

I have a different relationship with my mum because she always tried to protect me as I was the youngest of four brothers.

Sometimes I was a bit angry with her because my dad wanted to go bowling and she did not want him to go.

I always sided with my dad because I wanted him to go and have a relaxed time.

I was always on my dad’s side growing up and that now makes me sorry in some ways because now I understand why she did what she did.

Their relationship was incredible.

For 55 years they were married and they were two people with one soul. Now I am very sorry because I know what she feels without my dad, she always talks about him and she has the picture by her side all the time.

Obviously my dad passed away and my thoughts always stayed with him but it is also true that my mum suffered a lot and now she deserves to have praise.

For this reason I thought on Tuesday that if we win I wanted to dedicate it completely to my mum because I am always talking about my dad and never mentioned my mum.

This is not because I don’t like her because she is my queen and no-one can touch her, so now is the moment to give some satisfaction to my mum.

I have read Paolo's book and it is obvious he had very loving and supportive parents. Maybe he will dedicate becoming league 2 champions to both his parents, they would both be so proud of him?

There are only three posts on this thread but I wanted to share a little something on family and attribution.

I have been incredibly fortunate to have been raised by 2 loving parents who stamped their mark on me and made who I am. At aged 69 my Mum passed away and it broke my heart but at that time I was deployed to Afghanistan and so I had to carry on and do my bit. After 36 years I still sevre my country and enjoy the respect of family and friends.

When I came home from my third tour in that **** hole, I did what I did the first time as a son, I supported my Dad and he and I have got even closer. He is from Pompey and he loves his home area, his team and his son. So he follows the Town because I do and every game, wherever it is he joins in and lets me know he enjoys my passion for the club and even comes up for a game or when he can. It is all about familial love and respect.

So, here is my point. When PDC dedicates the result of a Town game to any of his parents, he does so with humility and genuine respect, just as would do to reflect how much my parents shaped me and how I respect and love them. Well done PDC, you are an insparation and I am grateful for what you are doing and for your family focus.

The above really is a very good post, just a shame more people did not see it.

Most posters seem to have gone for the ''Will Paolo stay?'' story and very few have seen this quote, which is really moving and great credit to the poster.

Fair play too you!!

John Young's Grumpy,

I'm not sure what it is that you're grumpy about, but your post was very moving.

My dad, (now 83) took me to my first Town game at the CG in August 1962 (we beat Hull 2-0), I was 11.
He was born in Nottingham and brought up in Birmingham as an Aston Villa supporter.
Nowadays, whenever we talk about footer there is never, ever any mention of Forest or Villa. The conversation is always about THE TOWN.
My dad instilled in me my great love for STFC, for which I will be eternally grateful. Thanks Dad.

Forgot to add that my son, now 33 has been a Town fan since he was 7 and is about to become a daddy for the 1st time.
I'm hoping that his first born will follow in his father's, grandfather's, great grandfather's and great, great grandfather's footsteps and become a life-long STFC fan.
