Di Canio plans to take another look at Bodin

PAOLO Di Canio wants Billy Bodin to return to Swindon when his loan spell at Torquay ends in January.

Wales Under-21 international Bodin has been at the Gulls since August and has become an important part of Martin Ling’s team.

The 19-year-old is due to return to the County Ground on January 8 and Torquay are keen to arrange an extension to his deal that will see him remain at Plainmoor until the end of the season.

However, interim chairman Jeremy Wray has confirmed that Di Canio is keen to have another look at Bodin, who made three starts under the Italian at the start of the season.

“Billy is very highly rated and he has done very well during his time at Torquay,” Wray told the Advertiser.

“Paolo wants to look at him in January. He has been monitoring his progress while he has been at Torquay and wants to look at him at the end of his loan spell.

“There have been a lot of changes at the club while he has been away so we will look at the situation when he returns.”

It is likely that Bodin will return to Swindon for a couple of weeks before Di Canio makes a decision on whether to keep him at the club, or let him to return to Torquay on loan.

Last week, Ling confirmed he would love to keep Bodin at the Devonshire club for as long as possible.

“He's Swindon's player and Swindon have got to make that decision and we'll have to assess that nearer the time,” said the former Town midfielder.

"They know that I would love to keep him until the end of the season and even possibly take him full time."

Ling added: "He's a big product for us. We'd love to keep him about us because he's had a successful time.

"He's been a regular here at 19, and I think sometimes when you've been a regular you want to stay a regular and I think Bill would like to stay as well.”

Great news - especially given that some more firepower is needed. Bodin will give his all given half a chance in the first team and the experience he's picked up on the south coast will be invaluable. Would've been gutted to have lost a home grown player with such prospects for nothing.

Best move by all - see if he is ready for us - if he is he stays and plays - if not loan back to Torquay later in Jan

Maybe he is local and has connections with the club. Maybe he is a talented footballer but he is NOT a goalscorer extraordinaire, which is what we need. Another one who got muscled off the ball when he played in the first team, but having said that, regular football must be in his favour, and a passion for the town (if he has it) should all be in his favour with Paolo.

So, if we have him back who's place would he take in the team, and how much playing time would he get.
Any assessment to be fair should see him play for several weeks so as he can gel back into the team to see any benefit of his time at Torquay. I wish him well, but I don't see a regular slot for him here, I think he will go back to Torquay and eventually on a permanent basis.

i believe Bodin could challenge RDV for left wing position but i suppose how he performs in first few weeks of jan will decide what happens. I hope he is not allowed to leave permanently as i think he is a talented footballer, have no problem with him having season on loan to get good playing time just think he will develop into a good footballer and want that to be for us.

Billy Bodin should be a STFC Player and has plenty to offer as a wide player or up top. With the extra expereince and back playing with STFC in good form he will be a good player to have in the side. Look forward to seeing a few starts in January.

Yes, I totally agree that he should be given his chance, without question, but given PDc's disposition do you really, really, see that happening.
People talk about Canio's passion etc but he does see-saw with his mood's, on the other hand his fellow Italians, Mancini for instance seem a lot more measured and predictable.
I would welcome Bodin into the squad, but will he get the time on the pitch that he needs to mature, somehow I don't think he will. That's not a hit against Billy but the way I see things unfolding.

Only watched him twice down here so far but what I have seen is no different to what he has produced for the Town. He has obvious skill on the ball and can take on players well but he is too inconsistant for my liking. He has been substituted by Ling quite a bit as he seems to lose interest if he is not playing too well. This inconsistancy could also be down to fitness or inexperience its difficult to tell. The Gulls fans like him and would be pleased to have him. I'm a bit like others on here, I can't see how he will fit in with PDC's plans.
On a different note, had a look at the pitch at Plainmoor yesterday and its looking good. Has plenty of grass in the goalmouth areas etc as we havn't had any frost down here yet ! The grounds a bit like the Kassam at the mo as one side is missing so it will be a bit of an odd atmosphere on Boxing Day.

Agree Don69, would be good to see him start against Barnet but he won't be playing in the F.A. Cup due to the dates..he doesn't return until the 8th i.e. a day after the Wigan game.

Not sure he would be right for the 3rd Round tie just yet. Like others I tend to think he'll be taken a look at and sent back until the end of the season.

I've always been a fan of young Billy just hope he comes good for us on his return. He has to show PDC right now that he is ready. 19 might seem young but most players who make it big are playing regular first team football by then - Rogers, Rideout, Trollope etc were all in the team by 16/17 and stayed there. Wasn't Billy compared to Ryan Giggs (on the football field!!!) a few years ago when he was breaking into the Wales under 21's? Hopefully Martin Ling will have polished his game up still more ready for him to shine for us. Bodin and Storey could yet form a great future partnership for us. At the end of last season when Paul B gave them their chance they looked an awful lot more lively than the jokers who'd been turning up each week to put a red shirt on up till then. Good luck Billy - I hope Lingy has had a good fitness regime down there because if not, there is no place for passengers with PDC, even highly talented ones.

Gonna be a fantastic atmosphere

Oxon-Red says...

I really hope BB is not sold and if he doesn't fit in on returning I hope he goes back to Torquay to gain more experience before coming back for next season. There is talent there and I have always seen him as a possible replacement for Ritchie in the long term (I hope his return isn't for this reason).

As to playing at 16/17, that has changed in recent years and only the very very best that break through at that age. The lack of reserve teams hasn't helped the younger kids come through. I seem to remember the football combination had nearly as many teams as the main league which meant a game every week was guaranteed for the up and coming kids.

It seems to me that STFC has a special place in the Pops Bodin’s heart so why not the same for Bodin Jnr. For that reason I hope the Bodin’s are part of STFC for a long time.

Think I got the last two (where two were available next to eachother) in the Arkell's off the website last night. Didn't fancy the stratton bank in January somehow.

Would definitely be a shame to lose Bodin given that he seems to have come on leaps and bounds at Torquay, but the reason he left in the first place was lack of first team opportunities, and should he still not be getting a fair crack of the whip on his return, he'll seek first team football elsewhere. As a professional no-one could begrudge him that.

Aye you cant begrudge him wanting to play, and it is essential that at this stage in his career he is playing games to help him improve.

If he can come back here and start getting games then I would be delighted. However im with people on thinking he might not quite be ready yet. (Although he has done pretty well at Torquay)

London Red says...
12:30pm Thu 22 Dec 11

Thats the main element - "yet"
.
If not why not sign him up for another 12 months and then loan him back to Torquay for the remainder
.
He can then come back in pre-season and compete to be part of the squad next year
.
Then if he finds himself still down the pecking order it might be time to consider selling over another loan
.
Hopefully that is not the case and he is part of the squad either in Jan or the summer as much as Kennedy is now if not more
.
He certainly should be targeting game time out wide left as this certainly is still an "open" position

£250k, bargain if he produces to the same level as his father.
I can see him going to Torquay for less with a big sell-on clause if that is the case.

I don't see why we don't do what London suggested. Extend his contract by a year, loan him back to Torquay allow to develop. Come back pre season and if Paolo doesn't think he can cut it in league one sell him then.

Paolo will understand that all of us are willing him to do well. As we know there is nothing better than a home grown player flourishing in out team.

In Paolo we trust. It's going to be a great Christmas and New Year!

Good idea to take a look, reports are he is playing well at Torquay. He will be better for the regular starts this season, and did OK at end of last season, so its up to him to convince Paolo he is worth a spot, I'm sure he would prefer to play regularly for Town than Torquay if he had the choice.

On another note, I see Paolo's regular Thursday column is not in today's Adver and the explaining statement says he has refused to do it this week. Refused is quite a strong word and would indicate he is either very busy or has the hump with the Adver. Maybe something to do with the aftermath of the Rovers game?

Sad -both of you I'm afraid in my opinion - club finances at the time were obviously a consideration I would think and even Dunc probably had a sell on clause written into his contract even then if a higher league or maybe even Scottish club?

The history behind the Torquay badge is just as boring as the badge itself. Introduced during 1968 the blue chevrons are supposed to be an abstract representation of flying seagulls !!!
Cheers for that I was totally confused by it..just didn't get any view of what it could represent.

Am I alone in thinking what on earth if the Torquay logo all about? .. It has to be one of the most boring logos in the football league - certainly not value for money...unless they paid a Fiver for the ink cartridge.
SAP - so now you're down to the microscopic examination of Torquay's logo lol!

You've obviously got all the kids pressies wrapped, done all the shopping, got the prediction league up to date and now like many treading water until Boxing day!

Mm!! be careful boy because I reckon if Mrs SAP reads that post there will be some more chores coming your way! - you know!

So if he's a proven goalscorer why is he avaialble in Jan? Surely BC given their plight would want to keep him?
They've been trying to get him to sign a new deal for months. As he's out of contract in the summer, they've decided to make sure they get some dosh by selling him now. Good player, but as I heard a City fan say on Points Bristol last night: "He's not in scintillating form at the moewment"

Lets all laugh at the Pox there bubble has well and truly burst after their early season start- Fat Boy Dubbery is out and they are leakiong goals- Hall recalled by West Ham-they've only won 1 game in the last 6 - Happy times and back to normality for the Pox.

STFC Marching on while the Pox can only look up at us.

Poxford FOREVER IN OUR SHADOW
It's nice to see Swindon fans supporting their local lickle football club when there are much bigger clubs nearer by (even with 3 sides) but I guess you've reached your peak now that you've run away with the league & had the visit already from the big club. See you in March for a sold out Oxford and the 6 point tally. Sold 9000 for an FA cup tie, wow you really are something.

well he should realise that the column should have been done for us the supporters, regardless of his thoughts on the adver, he was after all, the one who threw his toys out of the pram after the game, the adver only reported it as did BBc and Sky.
or maybe he is spending sometime with his family as it will be his first year off his life without his father.

At least come March if the pox get any penalties we've no need too worry, they only blast them over the crossbar into the car park to give their ball boys some excercise....
