South West Golfer
Austin supreme at Dainton Park
DOWNES Crediton professional Barry Austin compiled a three-under-par 68, worth 39 stableford points, to win the Devon Professional Golfers Alliance meeting at Dainton Park.
On a sunny, breezy day over the continually maturing parkland course, Austin's accurate tee shots opened the green to several of the demanding par fours. His six birdies were offset by three bogeys.
West Region PGA champion Sean Mason, Exeter touring pro Chris Gill and Robin Goodey from Teignmouth, who was celebrating his 40th birthday, were two shots further back.
Hele Park professional Duncan Arnold and amateur partner Steve Bristow won the pro-am with an impressive better ball score of 43. Bristow improved the card 11 times.
Mason and Jim Mills (Teign Valley) were a point behind while three teams tied for third on 41 - James Martin and Mark Dunsford, Goodey and partner Paul Stanley (Teignmouth) and Austin and Neil Vaughan (Downes Crediton).
