Wiltshire Paralympic star Stephanie Millward was fifth in the S9 100m butterfly final at London 2012 this evening.

The 30-year-old, from Corsham, began in lane six and was fifth after the first 50m but couldn’t close the gap on the leading pack as she finished outside the podium in 1:12.01

South African legend Natalie du Toit took the gold medal in 1:09.30, with Spain’s Sarai Gascon second in 1:09.79 and American Elizabeth Stone third in 1:10.10.

Millward admitted that she was disappointed not to fare better in one of her favoured events and said: “It wasn’t very good really at all but we’ve got more (events) to come.

“It wasn’t my favourite event but it was my second-favourite so I wish I’d done a bit better than that – it’s a shame.”

Millward will dust herself and get ready to compete in the S9 100m backstroke heats at 10.38am tomorrow morning.
